MLS Part of the Vikings Stadium Convo

ICEBOX

"Although talks this week about a roof for the proposed stadium moved from retractable to fixed to reduce the cost, the Vikings would prefer a moving roof because [owner Zigi] Wilf wants to get a Major League Soccer franchise. None of the 18 MLS teams plays in a fixed-roof stadium."

Riiiiight. Because MLS teams are just lining up to play in cavernous pointyball stadiums these days.

I could see MLS working in the Twin Cities if it were a small, soccer-specific stadium close to the Light Rail and downtowns. The young crowd in the Twin Cities is not unlike Portland. However, I doubt a new fanbase will be fostered if they have to drive way out toward Wisconsin and sit in a cavernous stadium.

that's right where my heart used to be..

seriously though, i like the idea of mls in new markets, but not in this stadium. it feels like a similar situation to the revs @ foxborough.

Boo...fuck this. This will just be another New England Revolution Foxborough situation. Wilf is just trying to scam taxpayers into paying for it because it won't just be an NFL stadium.

Also, we all know that retractable roof or not this field is gonna be FieldTurf. No doubts about it. And we need to get rid of that shit.

As great of a stadium that CenturyLink is in Seattle, the playing surface is atrocious. They need to wise up and get some grass. I was so disappointed when Portland and Vancouver came into this league with the fake stuff. Props to Philly (and Montreal) for coming into the league the right way.

Fixed stadiums stink but being from Minnesota it needs to have the option of having a roof (which is where the Twins will eventually regret not putting a retractible one of Target Field with the MN unreliable weather). Excited that Wilf is thinking about an MLS team cause it would be good in Minnesota (people in the Twin Cities enjoy soccer a lot more than you outsiders understand).

I just wish it would be in the city and as someone previously mentioned it is not unlike Portland as far as demographics go here.
