The Freddie Ljungberg Deal: Couldn't Both Sides do Better?

So much for the sweet Swede and TiTi getting the band back together in New York. Freddie Ljungberg has moved to Chicago and I'm kinda torn on who is getting the shaft in this deal: Chicago or Seattle? On one hand all Seattle is getting for a DP is a conditional draft pick. A conditional draft pick? Are you kidding me? The 'Quakes got a conditional draft pick AND Chris Wondolowski for Cam Weaver. Surely Ljungberg is worth more than that; they couldn't throw in some "future considerations" at the very least?

And Chicago? They get another gifted but sortakindacrazygonuts guy to go along with gifted but sortakindacrazygonuts Nery Castillo. Basically they are going to have a midfield made up of a Euro and a Latino version of Murdoch from The A-Team. Is there really a winner in this deal?

Seattle also gets out of the balance of his $1.3m salary and the $250k hit for carrying 3 DP's. That's basically a mil to get rid of a dude they probably don't need.

The Fire basically upgraded from Mapp to Ljungberg. Not to bad on the Fire's part if you ask me.

Seattle has to be happy for unloading him and his salary. They've been better without him this season anyway... now they have time for another DP too. Sure they could have wanted more picks or something, but most importantly is he is gone and hopefully they can get someone else that makes them better now rather then drags the team down.

you forgot, chicago fans are sortakindacrazygonuts too...

I dont think anyone got the shaft in this deal... Seattle just wanted to get rid of ljungberg, and they did. On chicagos part they get a very good midfielder for basically nothing, and he could either be really great or really bad, but it doesnt matter cuz he is only under contract til the end of the season, so if he doesnt work out then hes gone, and they got him for nothing. Its a very smart risk on the Fires part.

Yeah, this is a good deal for both sides. Freddie/Sigi was souring fast, and now that door is closed -- good for both of them.

Chicago gets a DP on what amounts to an extended trial. They have no obligation to him past the remainder of the season and if he doesn't work out... well, good luck with the rest of your life, Freddie. On the other hand he might be able to drag 'em to the playoffs. Not like Justin "I'm a loafer" Mapp was doing much around there.
