American Soccer's Most-Famous Has-Been Appears to be Rising From Grave

Cosmos

What the hell is really going on with the New York Cosmos? For a team that doesn't exist they sure seem to be raising their profile as of late. I'm not lying to you when I say that I see more stickers for this team on lampposts, in subways and streetsigns in culturally-influential lower Manhattan than I've ever seen advertising for RBNY in the city.

They've also got that newish website --which dropped a new video this morning. Why is someone investing in a street marketing campaign for a defunct club? Why is someone dropping Matt & Kim-soundtracked mixtapes chocked full of Chinaglia goals? Why, why, why? Surely the truth is out there...could someone please tell it?

"We are very focused on trying to have that 20th team in New York - a second team in New York, a rival for the Red Bulls," he said in an interview Tuesday.

"We have got a lot of work to do to achieve that. We may or may not achieve that but that is our goal and our main focus for the 20th team. That would be pretty cool," he said, confirming any new team would be in New York City proper.

cosmos/mets 2012. i hope it happens, it will make the league, and the nyc area more competitive. getting to harrison, while so much better than getting to old giants stadium, is still a pain in the ass for a lot of people who live in the city, queens, bk, and long island.

but yeah, i see the cosmo stickers downtown all over the place too. rbny needs to get a street team on that.

Oh, this is Hipster Pandering 101:
Lower Manhattan + Guerrilla marketing + Indie music + Old school = "Authenticity"

Next phase: "Grassroots" of Cosmos vs. Corporate $$$ from poisonous soda company.

Next step, an ad disguised as a blog post to snag 'entry-level' soccer alts [via CRLS/HRO]

Believe it or not I once had a convo with CRLS about Sacha Kljestan being the most ALT of the American soccer bros.

The BIGGEST question is: What's up with the authentic and link umbro logo at the bottom of the site? Huh.

"Paul Kemsley plans to launch a team probably by December 2010 in an interview with Wall Street Journal" Paul kemsley also recently bought the rights to the cosmos. Seems something big is happening behind the scenes.
