From my experience, you can never go wrong with Bloc Party. Any and all Bloc Party. "Mercury" or "Ares" in particular. Sorry couldn't recommend anything new. New music scares me.
Francis and the lights - Dude is opening up from drake on his new tour and has been destroying NYC for the past 2 years. It's warrented several drives from Philly jus tto check him out. (francisandthelights.com)

surfer blood! their whole album. "swim" is my favorite.
He's been plugging the xx for a while now. I still haven't warmed to the new Spoon, but I keep going back to it to give it another chance. I'll probably end up "discovering" it six months after the fact like I do with every album Interpol releases. But it's the first Spoon album that hasn't grabbed me right away. By the way, for another Austin band that sound like Spoon Jr. (with a touch of Elliott Smith), check out Wiretree.
Second Michael's suggestion. It's been a while since the last new guitar band that didn't sound painfully self-aware of their retro-ness. Surfer Blood just play their instruments well.

I love 60 & 70's Jamaican ska & reggae. Listen to some Maytals, Desmond Dekker, old Bob Marley & The Wailers, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Justin Hinds & the Dominoes, Prince Buster, the Skatalites, The Crystalites, Laurel Aitken, Jackie Opel, King Stitt, The Ethiopians, The Paragons, etc.
Look for Trojan (Records) Box Sets on iTunes for a start.
