ESPN Fan Feast: World Cup Edition

Remember, ESPN hates soccer and does nothing to promote it. Ever.*

Thought this was pretty cool until Kenny Mayne said "maybe someday we'll send American fans to a World Cup who will do something more than the wave"...I was in Germany in '06 in Gelsenkirchen and Kaiserslautern, and the US fans were fantastic...especially in K-town against Italy.

Thought this was pretty cool until Barcelona and Real Madrid fans started (weakly) celebrating and high-fiving each other for some inexplicable reason.

Saw this before work this morning. Made me laugh and really appreciated it. Nice to see progress, small it may be, but nice nevertheless.

too bad all the ignorant people (like the dumb pair in the video) all work at ESPN :)

can we all agree that we, as soccer fans, are automatically soccer prophets in most of America? I constantly am bolstering my argument for the sport like a lawyer defending the suit against it. This guy brings up some great empirical points (like the 2 billion of 6 billion ratio). I would love to see more installments of the same idea.

I agree with Anonymous @ 5:52.

"+1," as they say.

Brilliant ad, we need more like this to run on TV. Keep up the good work ESPN, run ads like this about your MLS coverage and you're there.

LAAAAAAAAAAAAME. This commercial treats soccer like a niche sport. I thought we were over that. Let the sport sell itself. Don't sell it with a guy that sounds like a used car salesman.

Furthermore, what kind of argument is "two billion people love it so it's gotta be good right?" That's just logically stupid and insulting.

The premise is good, but the commercial was super cheese. I don't thats going to convince any of the nay sayers. It looked like a bad after school special.

Well if ESPN really liked soccer, they'd do what it takes to get the English broadcast rights to the US/Mexico qualifier coming up next month. I know there's a feud going on with Telemundo, but this is ridiculous. One of the biggest games of the last few years and no coverage?

Mr. Fish said...

Brian, don't blame ESPN. Blame Telemundo. Apparently, they asked ESPN for 3-4x the rights fees than for similar matches.

Remember, US-MEX isn't in prime time, it's 4-6p ET.

As it stands, Telemundo is planning an "English-on-SAP" audio track to the 8/12 match.

Crap infomercial. But I'm not the audience. The poor guy doing most of the talking sounded like he was hating having to say everything he was saying.

Nevertheless, it's airing, I guess that's cool.

I liked it!

It wasn't a commercial. It was one in a series of segments on sporting events that Mayne points to that people should see if they are true sports fans.

Call it lame if you want. I liked it, and just maybe that little twerp John Anderson watched it and learned something.
