Eric Wynalda x Booze x Facebook

Waldo

We all know the dangers of drunken text messaging but I think as we move deeper into the age of connectivity we need to pause for a moment to acknowledge the dangers of drunken Facebook status updates.

My man KK noticed via Deadspin that Eric Wynalda had something of a late-night, 3 martini meltdown after watching the Yanks lose to Italy and felt it was best that he share it with America. He also feels that it would be best for "somebody to get dirt in their pussy". Nice. All I can say is thank God he's not calling WPS games.

Classic.

One time Wynalda sent me a Facebook message that "I wouldn't be hard to find" when I made comment on Facebook about his poor commentating.

I know he takes a lot of heat, but there are so few real personalities in American soccer. Wynalda doesn't filter himself, loves American soccer and MLS. So what if he's crude sometimes. I'd take him over Harkes any day.

I'd agree with Adam if it weren't for the fact that Wynalda's personality is terrible. The guy is an absolute loser. One of the best strikers we've seen in the US on the field; off it, he's an egomaniacal douche will very little insight into the game of soccer. He's a kind of asshole cheerleader for a certain type of American soccer player.

If we want to talk about real commenting, I think this week's ESPN game of the week had it. Glenn Davis and Kyle Martino (who was killing me by how he mispronounced "Jacqua," but that's beside the point) were absolutely fantastic. I totally agree with this article: http://www.socceramerica.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&art_aid=32802

For those who didn't see the game, see if you can check it out. We might actually have announcers who make you want to leave the volume on. Unlike that fucking tool Wynalda.

Come on, its great he says what he feels, deep down he's a nut fan like the rest of us.

jjs.... I agree with you on behalf of the commentating of the mls game. First of all, the atmosphere in seattle seems to be amazing. I wish I could see it first hand. However, the reason I know about Glenn davis is the reason I can't. I am from Houston. I have listened to and read Glenn's stuff. I am really impressed and see him as a big American voice in soccer.

What on earth do you people have against telling the truth? The "pussy" comment might not get the Martha Stewart award for political correctness, but he's A+ dead on. I like him better as a commentator than as a player.

Oh, and I have no problem with his egomaniacal douchleadership role in society.

Ok children, let's get this straight. Don't confuse the message from the messenger. Waldo is many things, poor guy, but on this one he is dead on accurate.

Yes, the "lads" absolutely played like they had vaginas, except saying that is not fair to our WNT who has 2 World Cups and 2 Olympic Gold medals to show for their hard work.

Instead of blaming Waldo, why not ask why we play with no courage, no heart, no pride, no self-respect. Come on Sunil, give us a coach and players who know what that is.

This is what we need... people who have respect AND pride for the shirt! Someone to tell these dudes on the field to either sweat it or beat it! Thanks!

"Glenn Davis and Kyle Martino (who was killing me by how he mispronounced "Jacqua,""

He also mispronounced "Le Toux" He kept on saying "Le Toe". I don't know why people like this guy. He's corny to me.

One has to wonder if this is the outcome of Harkes having one's wife.

Wife first, job second. Ouch.

*hi-fives Binks*

I'm just disappointed it took 11 posts to get there.

That, by the way, is the ranting of someone (and Harkes/Lalas was implying the same thing if not with such vulgarity) who had done as much as possible in his career to blaze a trail for the people behind him and is watching those same spolied brats completely squander that inheritance.

The guy was drunk and made absolutely spot-on comments regardless of their crudity. His on-air skills have nothing to do with this. The guy spoke his mind unlike almost anyone in US Soccer these days. I applaud the guy.

I actually prefer Wynalda to Harkes for commentary.

I'll never forget Harkes giving himself kudos for the great questions he was asking Bruce Arena before he got hired by LA.

Wynalda apparently sent an email to deadspin saying his facebook was hacked.

Wynalda is great, I miss him as a commentator.

Yes, Wynalda claims these Facebook messages were not written by him.

Also, there are idiots in the Deadspin comments section mocking the fact that Wynalda implied the players have "pussies," cueing up the obligatory "soccer fag" jokes.

Have these idiots ever actually played a sport? (Or been in the military, or done anything else remotely masculine?) With team mates, or platoon mates, or whoever, that sort of language is very common. It's a very typical sort of tough love/bonding talk.

Think about the classic gridiron coach, out on the practice field snarling "come on, ladies, pick up the pace!" or whatever.

Good God, the soccer bashers will latch onto anything. And, yes, we soccer lovers will reliably overreact.

I love Waldo. He's a nut. We need our own crazy drunken ex-player to say what most of us are thinking after a bad game. At least US Soccer is sane enough not to make him the coach (see Mexico and Argentina).

I'd take Wynalda more seriously if one of the things he found to bitch about was that Donovan got to take penalties to "pad his stats." Rather than be happy that the team is scoring goals however it can, he's pissed that Donovan knocked him to number two on the all-time list.

Bill Cosby once pointed out that cocaine's tendency to "intensify your personality" is a problem if you're already an asshole. Looks like all Wynalda needs is beer.

Eric Wynalda was an excellent USA soccer player, he had very good skills, and he always did his best on the field, was a responsible player and a leader of his team.

In deed drunk-messaging is dangerous, one can say things that can later regret, specially towards women.
