Wow. This left me speechless. What Ad Agency in their right mind would allow for such garbage to actually air? yeesh. Also, the "Austin Aztex"????Is their team comprised solely of Native Arizonans, Texans, and ancient Aztec peoples? I'm somehow offended even though I refuse to ever be politically correct. Maybe its b/c I'm a native Arizonan (note: not a native American Indian), and they didn't even ask me to try out for them. bastards.
why does it say mls tickets at the end?
They have put together 3 pre-season friendlies with MLS teams and are selling tickets to those games in special packages. Hence the "mls tickets" bit.Plus, Native Arizonans == Aztec people? Really? I'm pretty sure those people hail from central Mexico. (and wikipedia backs me up on that.) But in any case "Aztecs" is a handy enough mascot, and for those of you who don't know we Texans love to have names of groups, companies, etc. that end in "Tex".
@anonymous - I had a feeling some Texans would have trouble in figuring that out. You're absolutely correct that the Aztecs came from central Mexico. I was making a TRIPLE play on words, and clearly you thought there were already two outs.Or did you not get that pun either?Ps - I'm all for soccer gaining in popularity anywhere and everywhere, I just thought this ad to be a bit corny, and the team name to be even worse. just my opinion though
Why?! Why did they have to spell it like that?? Couldn't they refrain from the gimmick marketing name? Aren't we so passed that? Why couldn't it just be Aztecs? Hopefully Chivas can go under and we can bring back the LA Aztecs. That would be awesome. No one would root for Galaxy anymore. What a derby that would be.
San Diego State, as wells as several local amateur and semi-pro clubs in the US (including the Peninsula NJ Aztecs, whose women's senior team played in a USOpen Cup final in 2002 or 2003) are the Aztecs, so for branding sake they changed the spelling. Why they didn't just pick something else entirely is beyond me. I think it's stupid too, and I look forward to mocking them when they play the timbers.
Maybe the name could have been better, but it is what it is. Has been for more than a year, as they fielded a U23 team in the PDL last year (and will continue to, alongside the USL-1 side). Is it really worse than "Red Sox"? If you think about that name, as if it were brand new, I don't see how it would be any less "WTF?" than Aztex seems to you right now. But you don't think of it that way, because you're used to it. "Red Sox" isn't the name of a colored, random item of clothing spelled wrong, it's the storied MLB team from Boston. That's how the Aztex will be, soon enough. The folks in charge are part owners of Stoke City, of the EPL. They're lifelong lovers of the game, and they know what they're doing. For example, the 3 MLS preseason games (against, for the record: the Revs, the Dynamo & the Crew). Also rumored but not yet confirmed, additional exhibitions against Mexican Primera División teams, sure to be total sellouts again this year.@markovitch, enjoy mocking us when the Timbers play us, and we'll enjoy mocking you after we win. ;-)
I kinda liked it
@Jared: you assume they used an Ad Agency.
