U.S. vs. Mexico: The End of Hype

This was the scene at Cladagh in Columbus last night. I'm heading down to Nevada Smith's in Mahattan to do my damnedest to help repeat it tonight. So let's quit talking about it and let's go and do it. Signing off...see you on the other end of the match.

Two-Nil, always a thrill.

Nevada's was packed. Getting a drink took half the half. I left after the first half and rode my bike over to Iona in BK so I could get a seat and drink. The game was solid no matter where you viewed it though.

SF - where were you in Nevada Smith's? Also, for it being the "official US Soccer Bar" why the hell were there something like 30-40 mexican fans (about 3 of which knew the words to their own national anthem, btw). I'm all for fans from both sides being able to go to the same place, but there were some scrappy moments, espec. after the second US goal that just shouldn't be happening.

PS - major props to RBNY for having Reps or Demo girls handing out free Red Bull t-shirts before the game at NS's - it seemed to be a smart marketing ploy for them.

Also - Dill, the point was to pack the bar, the more the merrier. And if you thought it was bad then, you should have been there for the Red Bulls playoff games.

I was sat on a table against the wall about a quarter of the way in. Was a good time but I missed my ESC brothers who were in Columbus...not enough singers in the house last night.

At risk of sounding unpatriotic, why is God Bless America, rather than America the Beautiful, seemingly the song of choice among US soccer fans? The former has "soccer" all over it. It can be a soccer anthem sung slowly or a driving force sund more quickly. No matter the setting, the music of America the Beautiful sounds like it should be sung by a bunch of 6 year-olds sitting around the campfire.

There were a few of us deep in the bar near all the Mexican fans and the big screen that tried to get chants started (none of us are a part of ESC, though I am a season ticket holder and love them). But I agree, it was a bit weak. We did almost get the gooch song going though - too bad only two of us knew the words.

The point of a bar is to drink, or at least that is what it is in my alcohol soaked brain. During the MLS Cup you could at least get a drink downstairs with out waiting 20 minutes. They should put another bartender down there for the big nights.
