Video: Bocanegra Scores in UEFA Cup
I've had at least 3 conversations this week about how there were no Americans playing in the UEFA Champions League. So while debating the positives of Villarreal leaving Young Jozy off of their CL roster (and I really think there are some) I totally spaced on the fact that in addition to Gooch and Timmy Howard, Carlos Bocanegra is playing in the UEFA Cup.
'Los took the opportunity to remind me yesterday via his game-winning header against Holland's FC Twente. Incidentally I would love to see a compare-contrast graph at the end of this season of how many headers were scored for Fulham before, during & after the Boca-McBride era; the middle would probably be as steep as Everest.
Shouts to CS for the heads up. Props to 101 Great Goals for the clip.

You can watch the rest of the highlights from the Americans playing in UEFA here: http://watchsocceronline.blogspot.com/2008/09/yanks-abroad-thursday-highlights.html
When it comes to set plays Bocanegra is better offensively than England Captain John Terry. People just don't realize how much of an asset he can be inside the box on free kicks and corners. I think he has to be one of the best in the world in set play situations.
now I'm going to take some heat on this one, but lets not get carried away now. Is Bocanegra a great header of the ball? Damn right. Is he a danger on set pieces. Yup. But one of the best in the world? No. I'm throwing my 2 cents in with Klose, Robot Crouchy, Koller, Drogba, Ronaldo...that one last year against Roma was insane, before throwing Carlos' name in with those (and other) guys.
And don't get me wrong, at over 6'5 each Crouch and Koller should be good in the air whereas Carlos is a much smaller player who doens't mind getting into the danger areas (like Dempsey)...but best in the world is pushing it a little. But then again it was against a McClaren led side, so perhaps I should give him more love than Iam as 'brolly McClaren' is a tool.
Seriously,
I love the USMNT, but scoring free headers against low-level Concacaf sides and UEFA teams that don't have much quality isn't saying much.
Crouch is actually rubbish in the air, and will almost always miss the target. Great with the feet, though.
