"Clásico Nacional" Goes International

ChivasAmerica

I've been in the ear of a friend at SUM for month's now about an idea I have. After Red Bull Arena opens, Celtic v. Rangers would be amazing for the first non-Red Bull match there. With the Old Firm's history, the stadium's location and an international marketing plan that caters to the Brit's fondness for away games and cheap travel package's to New York for shopping binge's you have many of the required elements to make a big splash amongst the the NYC media.

But perhaps I am wrong. Chivas & Club America are the continent's fiercest rivals and have a beef that is the stuff of legend; they're playing each other in Chicago tomorrow night and it seems like nobody gives a rat's ass because I haven't read a single news article or blog post about it this week. Maybe it's due to the soccer media being bogged down with covering CONCACAF Champions League and the U.S. Open Cup Final this week. That or --REAL TALK ALERT!-- most followers of the game in America are so blinded by Eurocentrism they generally disregard the region's most competitive league while they feverishly slave over their next "____ to Chelsea" piece and fool themselves into taking the serially-fixed Serie A seriously. Lame, lame, lame.

Agree completely.

Euro-centric coverage of soccer in this country is why soccer will never be a big time sport here.

So many American soccer fans are of Mexican heritage. Yet we act like we are all excited over Croatia-Poland or Udinese-Livorno.

Please.

Most competitive league?
Fiercest rivalry in the Americas?

Not a chance
The Brasil league is easily top to bottom the toughest and most competitive league in the americas. I agree FMF is COCACAF regions most competitive league, but that's not really saying much considering their competition.

Ever heard of
Boca-River
Fluminense-Flamengo
Corinthians-Palmeiras

Maybe you should have wrote "most followers of the game in America are so blinded by MexicanCentrism they generally disregard the hemispheres most competitive league"

Argentina is stronger than the Brazilian league, from top to bottom. There's too much unrest in players and managers for Brazilian quality to shine through consistently.

FSC does a good job of covering the Primera Division given that the majority of people watching the channel could give a rat's ass about it. It's nice when I can watch it on TV, but I still spend way too much time squinting at my SopCast feed.

Reading is fundamental cousin. I didn't say 'the americas'. I said 'the continent' as in this continent as in North America.

Oh, and Boca vs. River is also Argentinian Primera Division. You might want to fact check a little before trolling.

Besides, with the Apertura Clausura set-up, and it's slightly higher rate of player turnover, it's pretty easy to see why the FMF is more competitive than all the other leagues in CONCACAF, in talent and quick team construction.

And lol at 'Mexicocentrism.' Have you seen the Euro-wank that is the comment threads at SBI?

So many American soccer fans are of European descent, so maybe that's why they like European soccer. So sorry im not excited about Chivas & Club America.

What difference does it make whether you prefer European, South American, or Mexican football leagues?

I really can't understand why people get worked up over this stuff. Good football is good futbol. I don't care where it's played.

Brasil league > Argentina league

No one cares because there are no points at stake. Just another trip up north to catch more dollars.

Perhaps a few American soccer fans watched SuperLiga matches and saw Mexican players throw punches, look for fights and give their opponents zero credit for winning afterward, and they decided that they just don't like those FMFers.

Just sayin'.

That never seems to matter when Chelsea or Real Madrid come over.

True. That never seems to be the case. I'd rather see 2 harsh rivals like Chivas & Club America than Chelsea v. a random Korean side (like in LA last summer). At least you know that with those 2 that the "friendly" would have some bite in it.

Um, I've got nothing to add to the above. But thanks for the heads up on this. I'll be watching tomorrow!

Mate, I love the way you write. Every morning, I get a consistent chuckle when reading the posts. BUT please can you do something about the apostrophes? Package's? Binge's? End of lesson and keep up the good work.
