Press play on the image of US Olympic midfielder Maurice Edu in China (from his personal website) and you will see 1st hand why this maybe the most low-energy athletic event in history. Ever. Period. FACT! When you have superb physical specimens like Edu, Jozy Altidore, and Brian McBride saying that it's too hot, they can't see and they can't breathe WHEN THEY ARE JUST WALKING you know there is a very real problem. If the smog --which is as thick and dirty as Kyle Beckerman's dreads-- in this video is any indication, these matches will be decided in the first 20 minutes due to mass respiratory failure; if no one scores by then it's going to be nil-nil draws all around.

in that case, it's lucky that we have Benny to take all the remaining air away from the other teams,
And take into account, the smog levels now are considered "good" because of everything they've done in the past couple weeks. Imagine what it is usually like.
isn't that hong kong? the conditions might be a little different where they are at now.
Looking at Google Maps, it looks like they might be across the way from Hong Kong Island, looking towards Wan Chai District.
That is Hong Kong. They're on the Kowloon side and that funky building across Victoria Harbour is the Convention Center. The humidity in Hong Kong this time of year is probably near 90% and the temp is probably over 90 as well. No different than a lovely day in New York. Beijing won't be as hot or humid because it's quite a bit farther north.
