Lockdown: US Soccer Rolls Deep in Guatemala

Strapped

Stevie Goff is down in Guatemala somewhere --sweating like a bastard I presume-- and posted an update on the security detail surrounding the stadium and the team hotel for the U.S. men's national team, who are in-country for tomorrow night's World Cup Qualifying match. Check this sh*t out:
  • 1,200 police officers
  • 1,000 soldiers
  • 100 special forces agents
  • 250 transit police
  • 180 private security guards
  • 1 anti-riot squad
Impressive. It's like they are playing a game at Gitmo or something.

Futbol is serious business in Guatemala. The US best hope is to come away with a tie. A close win, the refs will be threaten and beaten. A blow out, the Guatemalan players will be threatened and beaten.

For this reason and this reason alone, I hope the US just blows them out. Then I foresee a scene where the threatening crowd is advancing on Carlos Ruiz, who missed no less than three easy goals in the game. Landon Donovan is within hand clasp of the clearly terrified Little Fish. All it would take is for Landon to reach down, clasp his Gal teammate's hand and whisk him to safety. Then, at the last minute, just as it looks like Donovan might save him, on goes Landy's iPod 'phones and Ruiz is left to his fate.

And somewhere, Ricardo Clark smiles.

I want to hear the 'Bodyguard' theme, sung by Whitney Houston herself, as Bob Bradley takes Landy on his shoulders and carries him away from an angry mob.

How sweet...
