Thanks to everyone out there who has my back and tried to make sure I knew about the Altidore transfer. I got about 20 "Did you know about this?" emails in the last 24 hours from readers who were trying to make sure I didn't get caught sleeping. It's nice to know that like Jimmy Conrad, I too have a posse.
As big as that transfer news is, I felt --and often feel-- compelled to withhold posting about something that you can read about on every other blog when I have no new information to offer or nothing different to add to the conversation. Unlike some other blogs I don't do this just to hear myself talk.
Now Johnnie Harkes has something to add to all the chatter and has brought up something I didn't see much talk about yesterday: how will this transfer affect the newly injured Jozy's Olympic hopes? But I won't steal his thunder and I'll let him tell you.

The first thing that came to my mind when I heard this news was whether Villareal would let him go to Beijing. I don't think they will which is a huge blow to the US's medal hopes.
they better let him go man. He's vital to that team. What other forward will draw as many fouls, and resulting adu free kicks as Jozy?
Maybe the olympic committee, us or international, should pressure Villareal to let him go. He's hot right now and that means marketable. Young, marketable athlete + global stage = big time exposure.
I'm pretty sure Villareal is loaning our boy to a second division club for at least the beginning of the year. They want him to get as much playing time as he can and develop against better talent than he faces in MLS. It may be (mostly) the U-23s, but isn't that what the Olympics are about? They'll let him play, methinks.
