The Verve Are Totally in the Tank for TFC

NickMcCabeTFC

2 weeks ago I was all hot & bothered about going to see the newly reunited The Verve at MSG. In a nutshell, their guitarist Nick McCabe reaffirmed my belief that he is the best guitarist of his generation to come out of the U.K. Better than Bernard Butler for sure. Better than Graham Coxon. Better than Kevin Shields. And dare I say it better than John Squire.

And now that he (along with bassist Simon Jones) has been spotted sporting an MLS kit on stage --the band played across the street from BMO Field at Toronto's Ricoh Arena the night TFC played NY-- I think I love him even more. Even more fitting was that he put it on for the encore of "Bittersweet Symphony". I'm so damned easy to please.

Better than John Squire? Are you kidding me?

Here's the thing with McCabe. He can do all the abstract, wall of noise & distortion a la Shields AND all the melodious chords & intricate fretwork and jangle of Squire + get all types of bluesy with it. I think those 2 guys are Gods, but McCabe just does it all and looks so effortless while doing it.

What do you think about Jonny Greenwood?

He's pretty great as well. In some ways he's like a less chaotic Kevin Shields.

BETTER THAN Bernard Butler?..no stinking way jose. Go back and give DogManStar another spin or the "Suede" album for that matter.

I was at that show. Great performance, but the kid in front of me spent all of "Bittersweet Symphony" spinning his TFC scarf around his head and whacking me in the face with it.
