Expansion: Even the Indoor League is Getting in on the Act

MLS ain't the only league hoping to ride a wave of expansion fever straight to the bank. The MISL is looking to fatten up it's coffers as well with talk of a new club in Louisville (which I am told is pronounced "Lou-uh-vul"), KY. The club would be a tenant of the new downtown arena along with the Fire of the Arena Football League and U. of L Cardinals basketball teams.

I have no idea what the market is for soccer, indoor or outdoor, in Appalachia. Any players of note come from the bluegrass state? If anyone has a clue of knows anything else about this story give us a shout.

Don't know anything about the story but as a native son I can tell you that (a) your pronunciation is correct, (b) Louisville is not in Appalachia (although other parts of Kentucky obviously are), and (c) to my knowledge, the bluegrass state has not produced any players of note (other than me, naturally).

Here's what I know, which ain't much:

* The Louisville Thunder was a pretty good draw back in the mid-80s AISA. (Which, come to think of it, eventually turned into this iteration of the MISL.)

* Ken Lolla's the coach of the UofL's men's soccer team. He played for the Canton Invaders against those Louisville Thunder teams. That's a pretty good indication that UofL is taking soccer seriously - Lolla's a damn good coach and had Akron ranked number one in the country at one point. Hopefully if the university's taking an interest in soccer, the city at large will as well.

* UK is pretty new to soccer - from what I can tell, it wasn't a varsity sport there until 1991.

* The MISL is a fun league that I really enjoy, but appears at this point to be nothing more than an interesting and fun way for team owners to torch large piles of money.

That's all I got. I hope they get a team and I hope they support it.
